Explore the Northern City Tanga, Tanzania

It might be your first stop in Tanzania if you are crossing Kenya's borders. A good start with white beaches, warm temperatures, and calm local life.

Africa changes you forever, like nowhere on earth. ~ Brian Jackman

The first place we arrived after leaving Kenya. A wonderful town. I was surprised to see

bicycle taxis here. So it was even easier to move around and explore. In general, it is a small town with no natural tourist attractions. I recommend exploring the street food and restaurants. We found a fantastic breakfast bar with their local pastries and coffee (black tea, they call it coffee) for around $1 altogether. We mostly took a Boda to the coast, exploring the beach area. Either way, I needed a workplace, so we checked out multiple hotels.

Mkonge Hotel

A beautiful designed colossal hotel with a big garden. Full of playful monkeys and with super tasty juices. It is a perfect place for my online work due to its plugs outside and stable Wi-Fi connection. You have a fantastic ocean view and can gasp the Kenyan countryside.

Raskazone Beach

A wide sandy beach, famous and liked a lot by locals. It was packed when I went there. Some guys at the entrance want an entrance fee of 1000Ts (around 40ct). With that ticket, I could enter and come back whenever I wanted. The interesting fact is that they have a tide here. So arriving at the wrong time, you would need to walk far to swim a bit in the shallow water. Coming at the perfect time with all the locals, you can even jump in the water and dive around. A fun place to be overall! No possibilities to get some food though. Close to the entrance on the side of the road, some ladies are selling water bottles.

Tanga Yacht Club

It is only for members. Even eating there is not possible. So they will make you pay an extra usage fee on top. It looked good from the outside, but the service was sadly unfriendly.

Pizzeria D'Amore

Owned by a Swiss Guy and located in a nature garden. They were serving excellent food for ok prices. Recommended to get out of the fabulous local places and find some peace in the evening. Be aware of the mosquitos.

It was not easy to return at night from this northern part of Tanga (Pizzeria, Yacht Club). We would not find any bicycle taxi or Boda Boda to take us back. Even if there were free ones, they would skip us sometimes. Just that you know you need to walk for a while till you are closer to the city. Then you'll pass by a few Boda Boda stations, and it will be ok.
